Mr. GURNAM SINGH
Master at Govt Middle School JASROTA
Jammu & Kashmir (Kathua)
National Teacher Awardee (2019)
S. Gurnam Singh is a visionary educator, community reformer, and trailblazing mentor who has dedicated over three decades to transforming public education in Jammu & Kashmir. Currently serving as a Master at Government Middle School (GMS) Jasrota in Kathua, his career reflects the belief that a school is the very soul of a community. From remote, militancy-affected terrains to administrative leadership roles, his work has consistently bridged the gap between underprivileged students and quality education.
Core Philosophy & Academic Excellence
Entering the Department of School Education in 1992, S. Gurnam Singh built his pedagogy around the principle of individual differences. By rejecting "one-size-fits-all" teaching and tailoring methods to heterogeneous classrooms, he successfully lifted academic performance across multiple duty stations. This focused approach consistently achieved a 100% pass rate for middle school board classes (up to 8th Grade) and a 60–80% pass rate for 10th Grade students.
Key Institutional Milestones
GMS Jasrota Transformation: When he joined the school on January 20, 2020, enrollment had plummeted to just 17 students. Through door-to-door campaigning and community mobilization, he grew student strength more than threefold to 59 students. He spearheaded physical renovations, earning accolades from top administrative and police leadership—including the Principal Secretary PDD, DC Kathua, and SSP Kathua—for creating the best-looking school campus in the district.
Courage in Disturbed Areas: While serving at Government High School Barshalla—a hilly, remote area deeply scarred by a tragic militant massacre of 18 citizens—he countered pervasive fear with unity. He institutionalized the daily singing of the National Anthem during morning assembly, introducing a vital practice of national pride and normalcy where none existed.
Philanthropy & Resource Mobilization: To support children from downtrodden backgrounds, he frequently dips into his personal savings to provide school bags, uniforms, tracksuits, and desks. At GMS Lahari, he motivated villagers to donate 4 Kanals of land to secure permanent school infrastructure.
Pioneering Modern Systems: Ahead of systemic reforms, he was the first in his zone to introduce the House System, maintain individual student progress portfolios, and implement continuous assessment blueprints aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP).
Leadership & Distinct Honors
His exceptional service was recognized at the highest level when he received the National Best Teacher Award 2019 from the Hon’ble President of India, Sh. Ram Nath Kovind. He also holds Appreciation Awards from the District Development Commissioner Kathua, Rotary Club, and various cultural forums. As a Master Resource Person, he has trained over 1,000 teachers in District Kathua and earned distinction during Leadership Training at the Kaivalya Institute in Rajasthan.
