NEENV: A Professional Learning Community for Collaborative Growth

Introduction

Before reading further, just think for a second. When you first tried to set up your office or your home, where did you get an idea to keep the small knick - knacks, show pieces, the kind of furniture, curtains etc? Or even the recipe of a dish which you had at your friend’s place for the very first time?

It’s true that we all learn from each other and this learning is continuous in nature. I remember, when I visited a few schools in my district, state and even my country I got an idea about what could be done in my school to make it better.

This idea gave me a new hope back in 2017 when I completed a one year course on prarambhik bhasha shikshan conducted by Language and Learning Foundation. I wanted to share my course learnings with the teachers so that I can hone my teaching skills as well as the fellow teachers of my district. So I decided to establish a Professional Learning Community with the support of SCERT Uttar Pradesh, and I named it Neenv because I was going to work for the teachers of the foundational stage which is considered as the base of all learning/ education.

Neenv is a Professional Learning Community which is established to empower teachers in various areas. Neenv means the foundation and this PLC works in the field of foundational literacy and numeracy primarily. In other words, Neenv helps teachers to improve their skills by working together, learning together, thinking together and also sharing together about what they have done. This PLC was established with a group of 29 like - minded teachers from different areas and school settings to share the best practices in their schools, looking for new ways of teaching and also solving problems that are faced by the teachers in their classrooms.

Vision

Our goal is to create a community of reflective and innovative teachers who strive for an engaging, joyful and long lasting learning environment and who are committed to making sure that every child has a fair, inclusive and interesting learning experience.

The main objective behind establishing Neenv was -

  • To promote continuous professional development among teachers.
  • To create opportunities for collaborative learning and peer mentoring.
  • To strengthen instructional practices through research and innovation.
  • To foster teacher leadership and professional confidence.
  • To improve student learning outcomes through evidence-based teaching practices.

During the 9 golden years of my teaching career, I noticed that there were many teachers who work in isolation seeking guidance, support and professional dialogue. So, In 2017, I tried to provide a platform to such teachers where they can learn together, share their experiences, and collectively solve problems faced in their classrooms. And the goal is not only to train teachers but to create a culture of lifelong learning, professional reflection, and collective responsibility for student success.

How does Neenv work?

There is a combination of online and offline meetings, ensuring that learning remains accessible, practical and sustainable.

1) Online meetings- Members participate in the periodic online meetings where they discuss-

  • Classroom challenges and solutions
  • Innovative teaching practices
  • Assessment strategies
  • Foundational Literacy and Numeracy
  • Inclusive education
  • Educational technology integration
  • Emerging trends in education

These meetings encourage professional dialogue among teachers and provide them opportunities for peer learning besides geographical boundaries.

2) Offline Meetings - We organise face to face meetings bi-annually in the school of any member teacher so that we can learn from each other where we

  • Observe and discuss classroom practices
  • Demonstrate teaching strategies
  • Share teaching-learning materials
  • Engage in collaborative planning and reflection

we:

3. Professional Development Workshops

Regular workshops are organised on various themes like:

  • Foundational Literacy and Numeracy
  • Early Grade Reading
  • Classroom Assessment
  • Inclusive Education
  • Life Skills
  • Technology Integration
  • AI in Education
  • Art Integrated Learning

These workshops are conducted by experienced mentors, educators, and subject experts.

4. Capacity Building Courses

Members participate in well designed learning courses and certification programs to enhance their understanding of pedagogy, curriculum, assessment, educational technology, and child development.

These courses are a combination of  theoretical understanding with practical classroom application, which enables teachers to implement new learning in their schools immediately. Recently the team completed the 9 month ‘Prarambhik Bhasha Shikshan Course’ and got certificated by TISS and Language and learning Foundation.

5. Experience Sharing Sessions

During these experience sharing sessions teachers present:

  • Innovative classroom practices
  • Action research projects
  • Success stories
  • Challenges and lessons learned

These sessions help them transform individual experiences into collective professional knowledge.

6. Material Development

Members collaboratively develop and exchange:

  • Lesson plans
  • Teaching-learning materials
  • Assessment tools
  • Digital resources
  • Classroom intervention strategies
  • We also developed the translated version of textbooks in local dialect

This resource-sharing culture enriches the classroom practices.

6. Competitions and Professional Engagements- Neenv also organises academic competitions for teachers to encourage innovation, creativity and pedagogical reflection particularly in the field of Early language Teaching. These competitions are designed not merely as contests but as opportunities for teachers to apply their understanding of child development, language acquisition, and classroom pedagogy.

NEENV organized a Picture Discussion and Question Design Competition for primary teachers. Participants were required to create age-appropriate illustrations for children of Grades 1–3 and develop thought-provoking questions that could stimulate discussion, imagination, reasoning, analysis, and oral language development.

The competition encouraged teachers to:

  • Design child-friendly learning materials.
  • Develop higher-order thinking questions.
  • Promote oral language development strategies.
  • Reflect on how children construct meaning through discussion.
  • Integrate creativity with pedagogy.

Selected entries were recognized and shared with the wider teaching community, creating a repository of quality classroom resources while celebrating teacher innovation.

7. Peer Coaching and Support - The online and offline meetings provide support to teachers making them feel valued and heard.

Impact of Neenv

Over the period of time, Neenv has come up as a platform where -

  • Teachers feel valued and confident
  • Teachers are encouraged for innovation and experimentation in classrooms
  • The collaboration among teachers is improved.
  • Access to quality professional development is expanded.
  • A culture of reflection, inquiry and continuous development is created.

Neenv is not just a PLC, it’s a platform to support, encourage and motivate teachers for lifelong learning.  It is an initiative to strengthen the foundation of education through workshops, training, meetings, sharings and discussions because “When teachers learn together, schools improve. When schools improve, children thrive.”
